As a couples counselor at Solid Foundations Therapy in Downers Grove, I encourage couples every day to stop and schedule time to connect. There’s nothing magic about Valentine’s Day—but it’s good to have a reason to get out and spend time together! And if you know Valentine’s Day is important to your partner, that’s an even better reason to plan a date.

Our practice in downtown Downers Grove is surrounded by great local businesses. Here are a few ideas for a fun night out on the town.

Go classic with a fancy dinner date.

Have you gotten dressed up for a fancy night out recently? Go online to book a table at RBK American Grill, or call to make a reservation at Capri, where the specials on offer will include lobster tail.

    Try something new together.

Did you know that when we try new things, our brains release dopamine? If you try new things with your partner, your brain will connect that release with your partner and strengthen your connection. So try a cuisine you wouldn’t normally go for! Depending on your normal routine, that might be Sushi House, takeout from Thai Cafe, or even a visit to the new Barrelman’s Room at Ballydoyleto sample the whiskeys.

    Do a movie-and-dinner (instead of dinner-and-a-movie).

When you watch the movie first, you’ll have plenty to talk about afterwards. Catch a show at the Tivoli Theatre, then grab dinner at a counter-service spot like Guac N Tacos or Alfredo’s Taqueria to discuss the plot.

Cozy up with a new game.

Stop into Fair Game and ask for recommendations for good games for two players. Then, take your new game over to Peet’s or Starbucks and test it out over a couple of hot beverages.
